<p>Formed as the 100th Bombardment Wing at Portsmouth AFB (later Pease AFB), New Hampshire in January 1956, the unit operated the B-47E and KC-97G under SAC control. Redesignated 100th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing in June 1966, it moved to Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ to replace the 4080th Strategic Wing and operated a mixed fleet of U-2s, together with a small number of DC-130E drone launch aircraft and BQM-34 drones. The unit maintained detachments in South Vietnam during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The wing began phasing down operations at Davis-Monthan with drone operations transferred to TAC in mid-1976, and U-2s reassigned to the 9th SRW at Beale AFB, California. The unit was redesignated the 100th ARW in September 1976 and moved to Beale AFB to operate two squadrons of KC-135Qs until 1982, when tanker operations were absorbed into the 9th Wing and the 100th was inactivated. It was reformed at RAF Mildenhall in January 1992 under USAFE to replace the 513th ACCW as the primary unit at the base. The unit was established to operate nine KC-135Rs which were assigned to USAFE from May 1992.
